T5 HARNESS (Market Garden)
-
The experience at Normand y expedite d a major modification to the T5 . A certain scandal-seeking journalist ( Drew Pearson's syndicated column 'Washington Merry Go Round' , 23 ]une 1944) learned that eight paratroopers drowned in a lake at Camp Mackall early in 1944, and deduced that the Army leadership had neglected to provide quick egress parachute harnesses. Even Life magazine had a pictorial on the question (June 19 , 1944)
The first was done on a crash basis by removing the chest strap and installing the British produced release box that discharged all four lugs. The leg straps were left intact and extensions were provided with either a snap or V-ring on one end and a QR box lug on the other. These snapped into the appropriate harness piece were routed around the main lift web and into the QR box.
T5 thus converted were referred to as the YT7. These rigs were only available to units of the 101 st Airborne Division for the "Market-Garden" drop into Holland. The 82nd made do with standard T5.
